    Blue Oyster Cultブルー・オイスター・カルト

    70〜80年代に活躍した米国ニューヨーク産のハード・ロック・バンド。"へヴィ・メタル"という言葉の語源となったことでも有名だ（諸説あり）。しかし今の耳で聴いても、鋼鉄指数はそれほど高くない。むしろ、インテリジェンスを感じさせるロックといった感じ……。これはデビュー当時、ロック評論家のサンディ・パールマンがバンド・コンセプトなどに絡んでいたことや、パンクの女王、パティ・スミスが歌詞を提供していたことに関係があるのだろう。そうしたアーティスティックな側面に、グループが志向するオカルト趣味を混ぜ合わせ、ドラマチックで神秘的なムード漂う『Agents of Fortune』（76年）といった傑作をモノにした。
    80年代に入ると時代を意識してか、平凡なヘヴィ・メタル・サウンドを鳴らすグループになってしまうが、現在も細々と活動は続いているようだ。
