    ビックス・バイダーベックはジャズの黎明期における、才能豊かで革新的な演奏家だ。即興演奏においてはルイ・アームストロングと肩を並べるほどの才能の持ち主だったが、そのコルネットの音色はまったく異なり、むしろ切なげとでも言うべきものであった。そうした点から、彼をクール・ジャズの起源を紐解く上で重要な鍵を握っている存在とする意見が時おり見受けられる。世に出るきっかけとなったポール・ホワイトマン・オーケストラへの参加後、フランキー・トランバウアーやシカゴ・ローパーズなどのもとで、さらなる活躍を見せたバイダーベック。アルコールが原因で若くしてこの世を去ったが、カウンター・カルチャー（反体制文化）において、初めてスターとして認識された音楽家のひとりと言えよう。
