もともとはジャズ・シンガーを目指していたポールだが、高校の同級生であり＜PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL＞の専属プロデューサー、ケニー・ギャンブルの勧めにより、ソウル・シンガーとして『エボニー・ウーマン』（70年）でデビューを果たす。そして、前述した「ミー・アンド・ミセス・ジョーンズ」（72年）が超絶ブレイク。ギャンブル・ハフによる、ジャズ〜ポップ・ミュージックのテイストを取り入れたプロデュース仕事は、ポールのムーディな声の魅力を巧妙に引き出したのである。また、不倫／密会というそれまでタブー視されてきたテーマも、当時のミュージック・シーンにセンセーションを巻き起こすに充分なモノだった。以後この名曲は、ドラマティックス、フレディ・ジャクソンら多彩なアーティストたちによりカヴァーされている。
