    ビリー・ジョー・シェイヴァーは音楽を通じてアメリカの田園生活のさまざまな側面を描き出す。社会的主題を扱ったプログレッシヴ・カントリー・スタイルは彼自身の放蕩生活や辛い実体験をそのまま投影したところから生まれている。ウェイトン・ジェニングスの73年収録のアルバム『ホンキー・トンク・ヒーローズ』はほとんどの曲が彼の作曲による、道楽と恋愛そして敗北についての作品だ。いとも簡単に荒々しい曲からソフトなカントリー・フォーク調の曲へと移行できる彼のギター演奏も70年代のギター好きな人々に高い評価を得た。あまり商業的成功には恵まれなかったものの、「グッド・クリスチャン・ソルジャー」や「ライド・ミー・ダウン・イージー」などの曲は真心のこもった歌詞に温かいヴォーカルが、使い込んだ野球のグラブのようにしっくりとマッチする力作だ。
