    ロックンロール時代の幕開けを告げたと言われるオールディーズの定番中の定番「Rock Around the Clock」。ビル・ヘイリー＆ザ・コメッツ55年の大ヒットである。
    ビル・ヘイリーは、ティーンの頃よりいくつかのカントリー・バンドを渡り歩き、腕を磨く。そしてラジオ局のDJも務めるかたわら、52年に自らのグループ、ビル・ヘイリー＆ザ・コメッツを結成。ウエスタン・スウィングやR&Bの影響をミックスした軽快なビートを武器に、「Shake, Rattle and Roll」や「Dim, Dim the Lights」などのヒットを飛ばし、映画『暴力教室』の主題歌「Rock Around the Clock」によって頂点を極める。その後も「See You Later Alligator」「The Saints Rock 'N' Roll」「Burn That Candle」といったビッグ・ヒットを連発し、米国のみならず英国を中心としたヨーロッパの若者たちも熱狂の坩堝に陥れた。
    60〜70年代にはその勢いもだいぶ落ち着いたが、リヴァイヴァル・ショウなどで活躍。コメッツのレコードは全世界で6000万枚以上のセールスを記録した。
