80年代に「泡いっぱいの恋」や「ウィ・ガット・ザ・ビート」のヒットを送り出した、カリフォルニア産ピチピチ娘バンド、ゴーゴーズ。その看板ヴォーカリストとして活躍したのがベリンダ・カーライルである。
ゴーゴーズはデビュー当初の瑞々しいイメージに反し、カーライルのドラッグ＆アルコール中毒問題で85年終焉を迎える（94年リユニオン）。しかし、夫君の献身的な支えを受け、精神＆肉体的に立ち直った彼女は、ゴーゴーズの盟友シャーロット・キャフィのサポートを得て、86年に『ベリンダ』でソロ・デビュー。翌年には早くも２ndアルバム『ヘヴン・オン・アース』を完成させ、「ヘヴン・イズ・ア・プレイス・オン・アース」を全米１位の座へと送り込み、見事カムバックを果たした。透明感あふれる歌声、叙情的なメロディ、躍動感に満ちたサウンド——ポップスとロックをそつなくブレンドさせ、女性らしい温もりとしなやかさをたたえた楽曲の数々は、苦く辛い過去を払拭するほど清らかであったのだ。
その後も、『輝きのまま』（89年）、『愛になりたい』（91年）、『リアル』（93年）、『グレイテスト・ヒッツ』（00年）と作品を重ね、安定したアーティスト活動を続けている。
