    Be Bop Deluxeビー・バップ・デラックス

    70年代末期にイギリスで勃発したニュー・ウェイヴ・サウンド（特にヒネクれたポップさ加減）を一歩先んじて実践していた「早過ぎた」バンドである。
    後に、YMO解散後の高橋幸宏がアルバムにツアーに大重宝することになるギタリスト、ビル・ネルソンを軸に74年にデビュー。モダーンなサウンド・デザイン、知的に屈折した楽曲構造、ネルソンのクールにしてニヒリスティックなヴォーカル等々、ハード・ロックからパンクに移行する「英ロック空白の時代」を埋める存在として活躍を期待された。緻密なアレンジ／アンサンブルをライヴでもパーフェクトに聴かせる演奏力も特筆ものだったが、それでもネルソンがバンド・メンバーの力量不足に悩まされる場面も多々あり、活動も順調な場面ばかりではなかったことが悔やまれる。
    ニュー・ウェイヴ華やかなりし日々を待たずに、78年に解散。ネルソンはその後、ソロ活動を開始する傍ら、前述の高橋だけでなくデヴィッド・シルヴィアンらのツアーにも参加。現在もポップ・アルバムと実験音楽の両フィールドで活躍中である。　（小池清彦）
