    リンヴァル・トンプソンのスムースなハイ・テナー・ヴォイスに、よりコブシを効かせたらバリー・ブラウンの出来上がり——。
    バニー・リーのプロデュースでデビュー。ミリタント・ルーツ・スタイルのヴォーカルで79年にシングル「Step It Up Youthman」がヒットし、続いて「Put Down Your Guns」「Big Big Pollution」「Conscious Girl」など一連の正統ルーツ作品をリリース。80年代にはジャー・トーマス、ランキン・ジョーといった人気DJと組んでのディスコ・ミックスにも取り掛かる。また、リンヴァル・トンプソンとの「Separation」、シュガー・マイノットとの「Things And Time」などのコラボレイトがきっかけで、セルフ・プロダクションをスタート。シングル「Cool Pon Your Corner」や、名作「Jah Jah Fire」をフィーチャーしたアルバムなどを制作した。
    その後、一時セールスの伸び悩みがあったものの、83年には伝説の＜スタジオ・ワン＞にて「Give Love」「Far East」など10インチのディスコ・ミックスをレコーディングし、人気が再燃。84年にはDJチャーリー・チャップリンと組んでダンス・ホールのトレンドを意識したシングル「Belly Move」をヒットさせた。
    現在ではチャートの第一線からは遠ざかっているが、相変わらずクオリティの高い作品をリリースし続けているシンガーだ。
