99年、ロンドン南東部にあるデッドフォードで、ジョエル・ポッド（g&vo）、キャリー・ウィレッツ（b&vo）、スティーヴ・ロバーツ（ds&vo）、ティム・ワンストール（key&vo）の４人がバンドを結成。03年にデビュー・アルバム『ヴィークルズ＆アニマルズ』をリリース。USのローファイ・バンドを思わせるヨレヨレとしていながらしっかりとグルーヴのあるサウンドと、UKアーティストが持つ特有の湿ったヒネクレ・メロディーを併せ持つ彼ら。UKプレスもそんな彼らのサウンドをペイヴメントmeetsパルプと評し大絶賛する。精力的にツアーを重ねるのと同時進行で息の長いセールスを続け、最終的に本国UKでは25万枚のセールスを記録することとなる。その後、05年に満を持しての２ndアルバム『ツーリスト』を完成。前作よりもヨレヨレ感が後退し、UKの湿ったメロディーと胸が掻きむしられるエモーショナルなギターが際立った内容となっている。トラヴィスやコールドプレイなどを引き合いに出される中、UKのアルバム・チャート初登場１位を獲得。その年にはフジロック・フェスティバルにも出演し多くのオーディエンスを熱狂させたのだ。
