    American Music Clubアメリカン・ミュージック・クラブ

    80〜90年代にかけて、アメリカン・ミュージック・クラブは最もポピュラーで影響力を誇ったインディーズ・ロック・バンドの一つだ。グループは２つの顔をもち。それは画期的なアルバム『エヴァークリア』以降の顔と、それ以前だ。『エヴァークリア』以前のアルバムは絶望的でありながら美しく、ヴォーカルのマーク・アイツェルの空想的で泥酔した詞とヴーディの幅広い音色のギターや魅惑的なハーモニーを中心に作成された。トム・マローン、プロデュースの傑作アルバム『カリフォルニア』に収録された「ファイアフライ」や「ブルー・アンド・グレイ・シート」に代表される、孤独に満ちたダークな曲はAMCの傑作と言える。そして『エヴァークリア』で作曲とプロデュースの路線を変更、「ライズ」や「エクス-ガールフレンド」で彼らは頂点に達し、注目を浴びる事になった。しかし、続くアルバムでは「チャレンジャー」や「ウィッシュ・ザ・ワールド・アウェイ」などの佳作を残しながら、アイツェルの極端な感傷癖により以前の平静さを失い、94年サンフランシスコで解散した。
