大英帝国ロック界随一のお嬢ケイト・ブッシュは16歳の時、ピンク・フロイドのデイヴ・ギルモア（g）に見出され、３年後の78年に『天使と小悪魔』でアルバム・デビューを飾った。ヨーロピアンな気品と処女的エロティシズムが同居した小悪魔的ルックス（とくにアノ瞳！）、西洋古典をモチーフとした文学性に富んだ詞世界、官能的に響きわたるエキセントリック・ヴォイス——デビュー・シングル「嵐ヶ丘」が全英チャート第１位を獲得したことからも判るように、彼女の登場はあまりに衝撃的であった。80年リリースの『魔物語』では、従来のシンガー＆ソングライティングに加え、プロデュース・ワークを実践。以後、より明確なカタチでコンセプチュアルな“ケイト・ワールド”を展開し、孤高の存在となっていく。
