70年代後半に世界中を席捲したディスコ・ブーム。ここ日本も例外ではなく、原産国ではイマイチの知名度だが日本独自の輸入ディスコ・ヒットが生まれる、いわゆる“ビッグ・イン・ジャパン”という珍現象も巻き起こった。西ドイツ出身の女性３人組アラベスクは、その最たるものである。まず最初に日本のレコード会社と契約を交わし、デビュー・シングル「ハロー・ミスター・モンキー」が予想だにしない大ヒット（累計セールス40万枚以上）。それに続く「フライデイ・ナイト」「ペパーミント・ジャック」といったナンバーたちも立て続けにチャートを駆け上がり、その人気を揺るぎないものに。とはいえ、なぜこれだけ日本に受け入れられたのか？　それはキャッチーなフックを持った曲趣に頼るところが大きく、ダンサブルでありながらも叙情性タップリの旋律が日本人の心の琴線に触れたのだろう。
グループ自体は85年に解散。その後中心メンバーであったサンドラ・ラウアーは、本国ドイツでソロ歌手として成功を収めることになる。
