    Village Peopleヴィレッジ・ピープル

    時はレイト70s、ディスコ界にキラ星のごとき輝きを放つ新星マッチョ軍団が登場——その名もヴィレッジ・ピープル。カウボーイ、インディアン、アーミー、ポリスマン……と、今でいうところのコスプレともおぼしきそのド派手なコスチュームは、鍛え上げられた体躯に眩しいほどお似合いだった。
    ヴォーカル以外のメンバー全員がゲイということもあって、同性愛者の間で非常に高い人気を誇ったこのグループだが、キャリアにおいて「Y.M.C.A.（西城秀樹が「ヤングマン」としてカヴァー）」「ゴー・ウェスト」「マッチョ・マン（そのまんまやないけ！）」といったワールドワイドな大ヒット・ナンバーを連発。なにかと外見や私生活での噂が先行しがちな彼らではあったが、フランス出身のプロデューサー、ジャック・モラーリの辣腕もあり、ノリ重視のクラップ・ハンズ／アッパーなホーン・セクション／うなるようなファンキー・ベースという“ディスコ三種の神器”を各楽曲にきっちり収納。ちなみに日本でピンク・レディーが「ピンク・タイフーン（IN THE NAVY）」としてカヴァーした「イン・ザ・ネイヴィー」は、“いい男揃いの海軍へみんなで入隊しましょう！”というなんともアツ〜いメッセージ・ソングであり、その事実を鑑みた上でミーちゃんとケイちゃんが「ヤっちゃいな／ヤっちゃいな／ヤりたくなったらやっちゃいな」と囁きモードで歌っていたことも、非常に含蓄深いものに思われる。
    01年３月に元メンバーのグレン・ヒューズが肺がんのため50歳という若さで逝去したが、96年まではヴィレッジ・ピープルに在籍していたという。——最近表立った噂は耳にしないけれど、もしかしたら他のメンバーは場末のクラブやキャバレーで現在でも歌っているのかもしれない。マッチョな肉体を駆使して……。
