マンチェスターに咲いた奇跡の薔薇、ストーン・ローゼズ。88年、傑作アルバム『ザ・ストーン・ローゼズ』をリリースし、シーンに衝撃的に登場。当時巻き起こったレイヴ・カルチャーとも相まって、不毛と謳われていたUKシーンを一新するかのような狂騒的人気を博す。
拙さの中に確固たる意志を感じさせるイアン・ブラウンのヴォーカル、ブリティッシュ・ロックの系譜を引き継ぎフォーキーなギミックにも長けているジョン・スクワイアのギター、快活奔放でありながら重いグルーヴを紡ぐマニのベース、千手観音ざまのレニのドラム——ダンサブルなリズムとサイケデリックなリフがかもし出す麻薬効果は、絶大な享楽性をともなって鳴り響いたのだ。
１stから実に５年７ヶ月後、紆余曲折のすえ発表された『セカンド・カミング』はレッド・ツェッペリンをも想起させるブルージィなギターが押し出された作品となった。そして、この後、積み木崩しのように解散への一途を辿っていく……。
だが、永遠にシーンから消えてしまったストーン・ローゼズの遺志は、いつまでも輝きながら語り継がれていくだろう。
