    The Rootsザ・ルーツ

    89年に結成されたフィラデルフィア出身のスーパー・グループ。いわゆる生音ヒップホップ・ムーヴメントの先駆者であるザ・ルーツは、サンプリングやドラム・マシンの代わりに伝統的な楽器（基本はベースとドラムス、ギター。以前はヒューマン・ビート・ボクサーもふたり在籍していた）を使っている。もちろん現在ではサウンドの幅を広げるためにサンプリングも多用してるわけだが。彼らのジャジーなサウンドは、ひとえにメンバーたちの優れた音楽的才能に頼るもので、これはメジャー・レーベルからリリースされた計５枚のアルバムやライヴ・パフォーマンスでも実証済みだ。また、トレードマークとも言えるオーガニック・サウンドとともに彼らを特徴づけるのは、その肯定的で意図的な歌詞だ。MCのブラック・ソートは常に政治や人種平等、他人への思いやりなどについて考えさせてくれる。ザ・ルーツはヒップホップ界に氾濫する暴力的ラップとは一線を画し、オリジナルな音楽と知的なメッセージに重きを置くことで、後に続くアーティストたちに新しい道を切り開いたのだ。ラッパーとしてだけでなく、ミュージシャンとして、また人生のお手本として最も重要なアーティストだろう。
