The Niceザ・ナイス
67〜70年に活動したプログレッシヴ・ロック・グループ。EL&Pのキース・エマーソンが在籍していたバンド、という言い方が一般的だろう。デビュー盤では、ギタリストを含んだ４人編成だったが、彼の脱退後もメンバー補充をせず、エマーソンのウルトラ・テクニックをよりプッシュする形にシフトしたことで人気を爆発させる。
当時から、オルガンの上を跳び箱のように飛んでいくわ、勢い余って押し倒すわ、肘弾き腕弾きなんでもアリだわ、と巧いという以上にパワーで聴衆を圧倒していたエマーソンだが、その迫力に比べると他２名が技術的にもキャラクター的にもいかんせん平均的であった。次第にエマーソンのワンマン・バンド化が進行し、４作目『組曲・５つの橋』は彼のクラシック趣味が爆発した生オーケストラ共演アルバムとなるも、彼はその仕上がりに満足せず、同時期にキング・クリムゾンを脱退したグレッグ・レイクの声に応じてEL&P結成へと動くのである。 （小池清彦）
