“R＆B界のゴッド・ファーザー”とリスペクトされるジョニー・オーティスの息子、シャギー・オーティス。恵まれた音楽環境に育ち、また父親の血を濃厚に受け継いでいるだけあって、ティーンネイジャーの頃よりプロの音楽活動を開始。“天才ギター少年”と世間を騒がせた。そして69年、ロック畑のアル・クーパーのバック・アップのもとでデビュー。その後アルバムを発表する度に成長を遂げていき、70年代の中頃にはマルチ・インストゥルメンタリストとしてスライも真っ青の（？）ファンク・サウンドを展開。だが、その才能に比例した成功を収めることなく、人気的にはイマイチという印象が強い。「ストロベリー・レター23」をブラザーズ・ジョンソンがカヴァーしヒット・チャートNo.１に輝く、なんていうこともあったが、結局は父親ジョニー・オーティス・ショウでのギタリストに甘んじることになってしまった。
しかし90年代に入ると、クラブDJたちによって彼の作品が発見され、再評価の機運が高まることに。01年には74年に録音されて以来お蔵入りとなっていた『インスピレーション・インフォメーション』がデイヴィッド・バーンによって発掘され、若い音楽ファンの間でも話題になった。またトータスやハイ・ラマズなど、ポスト・ロック勢のファンたちからも熱烈な支持を受けている。
