    60年代に、ボブ・ディランと並ぶプロテスト・シンガーの旗手として登場したフィル・オクス。大学でジャーナリズムを専攻したインテリなだけに、デビュー当初よりベトナム戦争や公民権運動などを取り上げたトピカル・ソングを歌い「Talking Vietnam Blues」「Talking Cuban Crisis」などの傑作を残した。しかし、頑固一徹、常に孤独な匂いが付きまとうフィルは、徐々に時代の流れに翻弄されていくことになる。
    70年代はプロテストを声高に叫ぶシンガーよりも、より私的な内容を歌うシンガー・ソングライターが主流になり、フィルも矛盾を抱えながら路線変更を試みた。ジャズやロックのスタイルを大胆に取り入れ実験的な作風を展開するが、ロック・スターをパロったような銀ラメのスーツに身を包んだ姿からは、彼の屈折した心境がうかがえるだろう。さらにセールス不振も重なってか、曲を書けないスランプに陥り、アルコールに溺れ、そして75年、自らの命を絶つという悲劇的な最期を迎えることに……。
    しかし、その生き様が凝縮された痛烈な作品群は、現在も高い評価と共感を得ている。
