    Howard Jonesハワード・ジョーンズ

    55年生まれ。"シンセサイザーの弾き語り"スタイルで、83年アルバム『かくれんぼ』でデビュー。この全英１位を記録したアルバムからは、「ホワット・イズ・ラヴ？」の超特大ヒットも生まれ、とにもかくにもハワード・ジョーンズは華々しいスタートを切った。
    初期においては、異様なまでの高音域を誇るヴォイス＋キーボードの手腕を武器に、哀愁漂うエレクトロニック・ポップを展開していたが、80年代後半を過ぎるとサウンドは一転してオーガニックに変貌——。シンセに代わりピアノを多用し、ブラック・コンテンポラリー寄りの楽曲や、ノー・ギミックで温もりあふれるポップ・ソングを展開していったのだ。また、98年に発表された『People』では、ジャズの要素とエギゾチックなワールド・ミュージックのリズムを折衷させている。
    現在でも地道な活動を続けるジョーンズだが、ソングライティングにおいての抜きん出た才能は未だ評価されて然るべきものだ。
