    Graham Central Stationグラハム・セントラル・ステイション

    スライ＆ザ・ファミリーストーンのベーシストであり、チョッパー奏法の生みの親といわれる、ラリー・グラハムが結成した超弩級ファンク・バンド。
    ファンクの名産地であるベイ・エリアを拠点に、スライで培った方法論にロックやゴスペル、ブルースまでをも内包した雑食性、最先端のテクノロジーを混ぜ合わせ、強靭この上ないファンク・サウンドを生み出した。そんな特徴を活かした１st『Graham Central Station』（73年）の、リズム・ボックスを大胆に導入した「Tell Me What It Is」や「Why？」、２nd『Release Yourself』（74年）のタワー・オブ・パワー・ホーン・セクションが客演したタイトル・ソングなど、名ファンク・チューンを連発。暴走するラリーのチョッパー・ベース、筋肉質のリズム・セクション、紅一点、パトリース嬢のワイルドな歌唱——といった聴き所も多い。そして、『Ain't No 'bout-A-Doubt It』（75年）、『Mirror』（76年）、『Now Do U Wanna Dance』（77年）とコンスタントなリリースを重ね、黄金期を形成。
    しかし、70年代後半になるとグループはラリーのソロ・プロジェクト的な性格を強め、80年にラリーはソロとして独立。以降バラード・シンガーとしての道を歩み始める。
    なお、00年にプリンスのバックアップのもとグループは復活。アルバム１枚を残している。
