    Elliott Smithエリオット・スミス

    ベックやロン・セクスミスらと共にオルタナ世代を代表するシンガー・ソングライター、エリオット・スミス。スリーター・キニーを輩出した＜キル・ロック・スターズ＞からアルバムを発表していたことからもわかるように、昔風のシンガー・ソングライターではなくて、あくまでもオルタナティヴ寄りなのだ。基本はアコースティック・ギター１本で聴かせるようなシンプルな楽曲だが、ストリングスやフレンチ・ホルン、奇妙なアレンジのキーボード類を導入し、90年代ならではのフォーク・ソングを創り上げている。また98年にリリースされた『XO（エックス・オー）』では、L.A.のサンセット・スタジオでの録音を敢行、バーバンク・サウンドの幻影がちらつく過去と現在が折衷したような録音を聴かせている。
    映画『グッド・ウィル・ハンティング』のサントラに参加して以来、その人気を不動のものにした彼であるが、03年10月、自殺によりこの世を去ってしまった。享年34歳。６枚目のアルバム『From A Basement on the Hill』をレコーディングしている最中だったとのこと。合掌。
