    Eaglesイーグルス

    70年代にイーグルスはもっとも成功したバンドだ。もともとメンバーたちは、リンダ・ロンシュタットのアルバム『シルク・パルス』で演奏するセッション・ミュージシャンを探していたハリウッドのプロデューサーに見い出されたのだ。当時のラインナップはドン・ヘンリー、グレン・フライ、ランディ・マイズナー、そしてフライング・ブリトウ・ブラザーズのバーニー・リードンだった。イーグルスの初期作品には、グラム・パーソンズのような広い視野でアメリカ音楽を捉えた長期計画的なアプローチが感じられる。73年のデビュー・アルバム『ファースト』は、グラム・パーソンズの死後しばらくしてゴールド・セールスを記録した。３枚目のアルバム『オン・ザ・ボーダー』ではドン・フェルダーが５人めのメンバーとして新たに加入。76年にバーニー・リードンが脱退したためジェイムス・ギャングからジョー・ウォルシュを引き抜いたのは、最終的に900万枚以上のセールスを記録した『ホテル・カリフォルニア』をリリースするわずか数ヵ月前のことだった。イーグルスは81年に解散するまで音楽面でも体力面でも限界に挑戦し続けた。彼らの音楽は確かに複雑なプロデュース過程を経て作られた商業的カントリー・ロックかもしれないが、タイトでメロディアスな４部編成のヴォーカル・ハーモニーの魅力は特筆に値する。
