    エドワード・ケネディ・デューク・エリントンのアメリカ音楽に対する貢献は、どんな賞賛の言葉を述べたとしても多過ぎることはないだろう。エリントンは地を轟かせるようなビッグ・バンドを率い、ミュージシャンたちはそれぞれがジャズという音楽の礎を築き、彼が手がけたバンド用のアレンジは数え切れないほど多くの編曲家たちに影響を与えてきた。現在のスタンダード・ナンバーとして知られている曲を何十曲も書き、常により長い形態の組曲への試みや探求を続け、スウィングやバラード、アヴァンギャルドなオーケストラ作品を常に同等な高いレベルで書き続けることが出来た。単独で作業している時のエリントンは実に精力的で、まるで画家が色を操るように自身のオーケストラのメンバーを使い、それぞれのミュージシャンの才能やもっている音色を最大の効果があがるように活用していた。また、ビリー・ストレイホーンが共同で編曲や作曲、ピアノで参加した時には、彼の才能はオーケストラをさらなる高みへと導いていくのだった。ある時ジャズを定義してほしいと言われたデューク・エリントンはこう答えた。「この世には２種類の音楽しかない。それは、いい音楽と悪い音楽だ」。——デュークは、歴史上のどんな人間より多くの「いい音楽」を創り出したのかも知れない。
