80年代前半のUKでは、デュラン・デュランやワム！といったルックス／歌／テクニックの三拍子を揃えた若手バンドが数多くデビューした。そして、この人たちのことも忘れてはいけない ——“女装の麗人”ボーイ・ジョージ率いるカルチャー・クラブである。
アイドル的なポップ・バンドに括られがちな彼らだが、そのサウンドのルーツを探っていけば、英国人特有のブラック・ミュージック嗜好が顕著であることに気づく。レゲエを取り入れた「君は完璧さ」、ノーザン・ソウル調の「チャーチ・オブ・ポイズン・マインド」、スモーキー・ロビンソンが歌ってもなんら遜色のないモータウン調の「タイム」など……良質なブルー・アイド・ソウルが盛りだくさんだ。83年に発表された『カラー・バイ・ナンバーズ』は全世界で1,000万枚以上の売上げを記録し、スタイル・カウンシルの『アワ・フェイヴァリット・ショップ』、スクリッティ・ポリッティの『キューピッド＆サイケ85』と並び、80年代のUKソウルを代表する傑作となった。
だが、その後バンドの勢いはセールス不振やジョージの麻薬所持による逮捕などで急速に失速し、87年には“カルチャー・クラブ解散”という憂き目に。しかし、90年代後半には彼らの再評価熱が高まり、98年にボーイ・ジョージ＆カルチャー・クラブ名義で再結成。レゲエを基調にするシングル「愛をください」を発表し、さらには実に13年ぶりとなるニュー・アルバム『ドント・マインド・イフ・アイ・ドゥ』もリリースした。
