    Bill Champlinビル・チャンプリン

    ビル・チャンプリンは、70年代サンフランシスコの伝説的ロック・グループであったサンズ・オブ・チャップリンの中心人物として活躍。グループ解散後は活動の拠点をL.A.へと移し、77年に初のリーダー作『独身貴族』を発表する。この作品は、ボズ・スキャッグスのバック・メンバーとして知られるデヴィッド・ペイチやジェフ・ポーカロなど、当時"旬"の腕利きミュージシャンを迎え贅沢にレコーディングされた。プロデューサーにはデヴィッド・フォスターを起用。まだ駆け出しだったフォスターだが、その非凡な才能は開花し始めており、スケールの大きいサウンド・プロダクションで腕をふるっている。そして当のチャンプリンは、男気がにじみ出たソウルフルなヴォーカルで、ダンサブルなファンキー・チューンからシックなバラードまで、表情豊かに歌いこなしてみせる。なかでも、AORの王道をいく爽快なサウンドとヴォーカルのマッチングは見事の一言だ。
    またソロ活動の一方、アース・ウィンド＆ファイアーやジョージ・ベンソンに楽曲を提供するなど、アウト・ワークにおいても精力的に活動。82年からはシカゴへ参加し、グループの重要人物として台頭していく。
