    20世紀の音楽史でもっとも著名なアーティストのひとり、フィリップ・グラス。彼はミニマリズム理論を創造し、大出生を遂げた。名高いジュリアード音楽院でクラシックの教養を受けた彼は、ラヴィ・シャンカール作品を手掛けるうちに音楽的理念が大きく変化。クラシック音楽のルールを重んじるよりも、アヴァンギャルド・クラシックで用いられていたリズムや復唱を取り入れることを選択した。彼は70年代から80年代にかけて大活躍し、コンサートや演劇、オペラや映画、そしてポップ・ミュージックまでもを手掛ける。その成果は、現在のポピュラー・ミュージック（デヴィッド・ボウイやエイフェックス・ツイン）に譲り渡され、後続のアーティストたちにも多大な影響を与えている。
